The Five Phases: Indian Summer

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Hello Fall! Or as we say right now where I live, Indian Summer.  These are some the best days in the Northeast, high 70’s, dry and sunny almost everyday.  I see it as a chance to ease out of summer and into the colder months of autumn – cold, dark, fires in the fireplace.  The earth is not going to pull the rug out beneath us just yet. We just left the Fire Season and you can read more about that here.

What are the Five Seasons?

The Chinese believe that the seasons are surrounded by five energy fields: wood, fire, earth, metal and water.  These energy fields dictate things such as our emotional states and correspond to specific areas of the body.  The  fields also correspond to our tastes and senses and therefore to the food choices we should be gravitating towards in a particular season.

Indian Summer corresponds with the Earth element, and I am certainly an earthy person, liking my feet planted squarely on the ground (it’s true, my husband and friends will not hesitate to tell you what a wimp I am on boats).  We intuitively at this time gravitate towards the colors yellow and orange and sweeter vegetables such as winter squashes such as pumpkin, sweet potato, butternut squash, parsnips and carrots.  Fruits of course would include apples, melons and oranges.

The Earth element of Indian Summer is also connected with your stomach, pancreas and digestion and the emotions tied to it are imagining, sympathy and worry.

At the very least, the Five Phases helps us balance meals and eat seasonally and  if I am feeling out of sync in the season of the moment, I like to refer to the Five Phases.  Click here to learn more about the phases and how they can help you.

Every year when entering the Earth phase I start thinking about winter squash.   I just made this Roasted Stuffed Acorn Squash last night for dinner (click here to get this nutritious, delicious recipe). This earthy, healthy recipe encompasses foods right out of the Earth phase and is perfect for cooler weather cooking. Try it today and let me know what you think.

How do you feel about using the Five Phases?  Leave your comments below, I would love to hear from you!
